How to Enable or Disable Handwriting for Entering Text in Windows 11

This article explains how to enable or disable handwriting for entering text in Windows 11.

Starts with Windows 11 build 23481Windows Ink was improved to allow users to enable inking directly into edit fields with Shell Handwriting. This feature allows users to use their pen and handwriting anywhere they can type on their Windows device.

As of this post, Shell Handwriting only supports English (US) but may include broader language support.

This new experience can be managed via Settings > Bluetooth and devices > Windows Pen and Ink under “Shell Handwriting“.

Enable or disable use of your handwriting to enter text

As mentioned above, Windows Ink has been enhanced to allow users to use a pen and handwriting anywhere they can type on their Windows device.

Here’s how to enable or disable it.

First, open the Windows Settings app.

You can do this by clicking a button Start menu and choose Arrangement. Or press the keyboard shortcut (Windows key + I) to open the Settings app.

Moment Open application settings, click the button Bluetooth & devices on the left.

Choose Pen & Windows Ink on the right to expand it.

In Bluetooth & devices-> Pen & Windows Ink settings panel below Handwritingselect and expand tiles “Use your handwriting to enter text“.

Under Shell Handwritingselect a tile Use your handwriting to enter text. Then switch the dial to position Active to activate it.

To disable it, switch the switch back to position Non-active.

Close the Settings app when you are done.
