Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 has been dominating the Summer 2023 season, but some aspects of this season seem pretty different from Season 1. The adult cast is younger this season, but more importantly, a primary antagonist of the series, Geto Suguru, is shown as a friend to the protagonists.
He is shown as a kind person who only wants to help people, which is opposite to his image in Season 1. Even in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, Geto attacks Tokyo Jujutsu High School, which confirms his antagonist status.
So, you might be thinking, what changed his personality drastically? We shall discuss these reasons here, with a proper explanation for each.
Geto Suguru was a first year at Tokyo Jujutsu High School, studying under Masamichi Yaga. He had a trio with Gojo Satoru and Shoko Ieiri.
Suguru usually uses two techniques: Curse Spirit Manipulation and Curse Spirit Absorption. The former allows him to summon cursed spirits of different grades at will. The latter allows him to absorb any cursed spirit he wants, even against the cursed spirit’s will.
The young Suguru’s personality is that of a very kind person who always believes that Jujutsu fighters (who can use cursed energy to fight) should always strive to protect non-Jujutsu users (who cannot use cursed energy to fight).
But this changes as we see in Season 1 and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 how much he despises non-curse users and calls them monkeys. So, why did this change happen?

Here are the two main reasons which caused Suguru to hate non-curse users and turn to evil:
1. The Amanai Riko Incident
Amanai Riko was the designated Star Plasma Vessel for Master Tengen. Toji Fushigoro killed her during the Hidden Inventory Arc, despite Gojo and Geto, two special-grade sorcerers, being in charge of protecting her.
This event mentally affected both Gojo and Geto. Gojo was able to awaken his full potential powers of Six Eyes, whereas Geto went into an emotional breakdown. He started to question his belief that Jujutsu Sorcerers should protect humans.
Yuki Tsukumo, a special-grade sorcerer who appears in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 as the person who inspired Todo to become a sorcerer, told Geto that humans are the source of the cursed spirit generation. This was a spark for Geto to start hating humans.
Suguru was later sent on a mission to save a village from a curse. Here, he noticed that humans had trapped two young girls as a suspect for cursing the village. This snaps Geto, and he kills the whole village. He even kills his parents to prove that humans are worthless.
After this, Geto is kicked out of Jujutsu High and labeled “the worst of all curse users.” He meets Gojo after this whole fiasco, and he tells Gojo how he has found a path that makes him satisfied. This is the Geto we see in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, before Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1.

2. Kenjaku and Geto Suguru
At the end of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, we see Gojo and Geto share a moment, after which Gojo kills Geto. Unfortunately, the dead Geto’s body is used by Kenjaku after his death. Kenjaku is an ancient curse who uses his cursed technique to transplant his brain into other sorcerers before dying.
Throughout Season 1, what we thought was Geto Suguru was not him but just a parasite controlling his body. Kenjaku reveals his identity during the Shibuya Incident Arc while Gojo is being sealed. He flips his head and shows his brain, not revealing his name or anything to Gojo.
Kenjaku can use all the techniques his host possesses and even access all the memories of his host’s past.
Suguru might have turned evil before he died, but he would never have sealed his best friend to achieve his motives. So, you could say Suguru became something he didn’t want to be after he died.
